Building on Pandit Vishnu Govind Jog's Musical Legacy
Objectives
In the course of his own musical journey, Pdt. Jog actively sought out, and uninhibitedly and joyously imbibed distinctive elements of many different styles of musical expression from great masters of his time and combined his informal and formal training in both the gayaki and tantrakari elements of raga presentation to create a distinctive musical voice and a signature style that maintained continuity and harmony with the past and yet made the old new again,
The V,G, Jog Scholarships are likewise designed to afford talented young violinists the opportunity to absorb the distinctive nuances of multiple vocal styles and schools of Hindustani raga music while continuing to also develop their technical skills as instrumentalists.
Initiative 1: Scholarships
The aim of the Foundation is to illuminate and celebrate the path-breaking musical legacy of Padma Bhushan Pandit Vishnu Govind Jog (1922-2004) and to promote the violin as the accompaniment of choice in vocal presentations of Hindustani classical music.
To this end we seek to develop both Tansens (expert performers) and Kansens ( discerning listeners) symbiotically committed mining the boundless ocean of nada (sound) of which it is said
नादसागरमपारं पारं सरस्वती न जानाति ।
वक्षसि तुम्बं वहति यस्माद् भीता निमज्जनभयात् ॥
Nāda-sāgaram-apāraṁ pāraṁ sarasvatī na jānāti |
Vakṣasi tumbaṁ vahati yasmād bhītā nimajjana-bhayāt ||
(Even) Saraswati knows not the far shore of the nada ocean, for fear of drowning she carries the tumbas (of the veena) close to her chest
Our three key initiatives in this regard are outlined below.
Initiative 2: Promote Violin-Voice Collaborations
To illustrate the power of the violin to enrich and enhance vocal presentations of Hindustani classical music the Foundation will organize, support and promote raga music presentations pairing violinists and vocalists.
For raga music to survive as the seed-bank of Hindustani music, every Tansen needs a hundred (or more) Kansens to provide critical appreciation and unstinting patronage. The Kansen Project will organize and promote music appreciation sessions andintimate unamplified baithaks to present those faces and facets of raga music that transcend mere entertainment.
